Council Tax discounts and exemptions

If you’re a full-time student, you may be eligible for a discount or exemption on your Council Tax bill.

Who it's for

A student discount or exemption applies to:

• anyone registered on a full-time course who studies for at least 21 hours a week and where their course lasts for at least 24 weeks each academic year
• anyone under the age of 20 taking a course which has tuition or supervised study for at least 12 hours a week and where the course lasts for at least 3 months

For both forms, you will need to provide:

• your Council Tax account number
• the student certificate

We can process your application from 14 days before the start of the course date.

Changes that may affect your entitlement

You must tell us within 21 days of any circumstances that may affect your entitlement.  For example:

• leaving your course
• changing your address

Our commitment

If you are approved for a student discount or exemption, you will receive a new Council Tax bill within 14 days of completing the application.
