Benefits changes: proof we need
Changes to income or capital for benefit claims
If there is a change to your income or capital and you are claiming Housing Benefit, joint Housing Benefit or Council Tax Support, we will need proof:
Income from a new job (you and partner)
We will need proof of the new contract showing salary and hours worked.
Income from a current job (you and partner)
We will need payslips covering the last 2 months or proof of new contract showing salary and hours worked.
End of earnings
We will need proof of the end of employment, for example a P45.
Change to self-employment earnings
You will need to:
- clearly show separate home and work expenses
- complete the benefits self-employed review form
- where possible, submit latest accounts or profit and loss statement
Capital, savings and investments

Other income changes
If you have any other changes to income, we will need proof from the organisation or person paying the income. It must be clear what it is, and when it started.
Student income in advanced education (for example university)
We will need proof from Student Finance showing the breakdown of the amount of grant or loan, including term dates and duration of the course.
Non-dependant income
If there is a change to non-dependant income, we will need:
- if working 16 hours or more: proof of all current income
- if no income: a letter saying how you are managing living expenses
- if student: an exemption certificate
- any benefits claimed
Childcare costs
We will need:
- childminder registration, invoice or agreement, the period of childcare and cost, clearly stating the name of the child or children who are being looked after
- childcare vouchers: letter or proof of vouchers
- details if full-time or term-time arrangements
Statutory Sick Pay
We will need:
- a letter from employer
- pay slips for the period of sickness
- expected date due to return to work
Statutory Maternity Pay
We will need:
- letter from employer
- pay slips for period of maternity
- expected date of birth
- expected date due to return to work
